For four glorious days in December 2024, the world’s eyes will be on Dubai as athletes from diverse countries, cultures and age groups converge for the Dubai World Obstacle Championship. Physical fitness and mental sharpness will be put to the toughest test. Only the best will win.
The event will feature four races of varying lengths and difficulty, challenging the skill, strength and endurance of each participant like never before.
And wherever there’s sport, there’s an energetic community of sports fans and supporters to bring the event alive. Over the years, Dubai has hosted several world-class sporting events with the aim of encouraging its residents to embrace sports and active lifestyles for their physical and mental wellbeing.
The Dubai Government continuously invests in sports infrastructure, conducts free fitness programs, supports a variety of sports and runs public awareness campaigns to promote the benefits of physical fitness. The goal is to ensure that residents of this vibrant and dynamic city have every opportunity to pursue physical activities and sports they enjoy.

OBSTACLE RACES: A BRIEF HISTORYOCR EVOLUTION
2000s: GLOBAL CULTURAL PHENOMENON
The modern obstacle race was introduced in 1987 in the UK and Ninja Warrior started as Sasuke in Japan in 1997. American Ninja Warrior in 2009, and Spartan Race and Tough Mudder in 2010 captured worldwide attention and saw a surge in participation.
EVERYTHING & EVERYONE
The popularity of Obstacle Racing (OCR) led to the development of numerous races offering challenges across varying distances, terrains and difficulties. The races began to attract everyone from casual enthusiasts seeking a fun adventure to professional athletes eager to compete and win medals.
BEYOND BORDERS
Such was the growth and popularity of OCR and Ninja Warrior television shows, that obstacle sports quickly spread around the world. Today dozens of television shows, more than 2,500 events, with 20 million active participants and one billion viewers follow the sports.
THE ROLE OF WORLD OBSTACLE (FISO)
World Obstacle, the Fédération Internationale de Sports d’Obstacles (FISO), is the world governing body for obstacle sports and is a democratic, non-profit organisation formed by and for the athletes. It facilitates safety, fairness and opportunities for athletes to compete at every level, including World Championships, World Series, World Cups, and Continental Championships

Founded in 2014 to represent Ninja, Obstacle, and Adventure athletes, International Obstacle Racing Federation has grown and evolved. Today, it is simply known as World Obstacle, providing opportunities for millions of athletes by hosting championship events on all five sport continents.
The Mission of World Obstacle is to promote Obstacle Sports including, but not limited to Ninja, Obstacle Course Racing, Adventure Racing, Fitness Racing, and Calisthenics throughout the world, to lead Obstacle Sports, and meet the requirements as specified by the International Olympic Committee and the International Paralympic Committee. World Obstacle promotes World Series, World Cups, and World Championships in each sport for our member federations and their athlete members.
The inclusion of the Pentathlon obstacle discipline in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games ushers in the Olympic obstacle era. World Obstacle collaborates closely with World Pentathlon on this initiative, with goals to develop more stand alone medal events in IOC recognized international multisport Games.
